Phaidon International Internship

Posted: September 2018 Lara Edgcombe

Ten weeks later and my time as a Summer Intern at Phaidon International draws to a close! I’ve gained a unique insight working in their Internal Recruitment department alongside a team of fantastic consultants and managers.

It’s given me a new outlook on the recruitment industry, and I’ve learned firsthand the skills required to succeed. This is a company that truly believes and invests its time in the people that make Phaidon International the business it is today.

My journey started when I had just completed my first year of studies at The University of Manchester. I wanted to spend my summer working in a fast-paced business environment where I could improve on my current skills, but also take on board new ones which would benefit me in the future.

I saw a job advertisement on Linkedin from Phaidon International, who was looking to hire an intern. The role was to help the internal recruitment team with their busy summer schedule of recruiting graduates as recruitment consultants.

One of the main things that really stood out to me was that the company’s structure is based on organic growth. This means that they hire entry-level talent, and put them through an intensive training program and promote from within, rather than hiring externally.

I spoke with the Global Head of Talent Acquisition Cara Myers, showcasing why I’d be a good Phaidon fit. I was invited in for a face-to-face interview and was shown around the office. The energy is fast-paced, and I got an amazing vibe that it truly was a great place to be for my own professional development.

On my first day, I went through a nice, smooth induction process, settling in quickly with the team well and understood my day to day tasks. I also got to know the internal recruitment team and the way in which they work to achieve their targets.

As a Talent Acquisition Intern, my role primarily focused on helping the team find new talent for the business. I also set up and helped with the delivery of Phaidon International’s weekly Graduate Assessment Day, as well as carrying out market research and business development with universities across the UK.

Everything I was given had a purpose - to assist the team in delivering a flawless recruitment process. The Internal Recruitment team’s vision is to provide a best-in-class recruitment experience and product, for both candidates and hiring managers alike, irrelevant of office location globally.

Being part of the internal recruitment team also allowed me to connect with our international offices located in America, Singapore, Hong Kong, Germany, and Zurich.

One of the best things about Phaidon International is its unique ability to connect its people together under one goal. It’s one of the main reasons why we were awarded The Queen’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade 2017. Learning from each other helps to reach our targets together as a collective team. Although there are colleagues that are located and work across the Atlantic, it felt as if their support and input was no different from my colleagues based in London.

I had a great conversation with our New York intern Daniel DeGroat who was also a Talent Acquisition Intern. We agreed on the importance of doing internships for professional development, and why our time at Phaidon International has really inspired us both in thinking more about the recruitment industry, as well as where Phaidon International can reach by the time we graduate from our respective universities.

As my Internship at Phaidon International comes to an end and I reflect on the last 2 months in business, I feel as though I’ve learned so much about myself and the company in such a short amount of time.

The day to day tasks made me feel part of the collective goal of increasing our global headcount from 600 to 1000 people by 2020. Witnessing first-hand the hard work and dedication put in by everyone in the business, I have no doubt that Phaidon International will achieve and surpass its targets. When it does it will be thanks to its collective efforts as a business to break boundaries.

I’d like to thank the incredible Internal Recruitment team that I’ve had the pleasure of working with these last 2 months which includes Cara Myers, Aasha Anam, Aaron Gonsalves, Adeel Iqbal, and Bilal Ahmad who really are absolute superstars to work with. Thank you for making my time at Phaidon International enjoyable and worthwhile.
