Salary, Job Description and Skill Requirements

At its core, business development includes activities, ideas and initiatives aimed towards building or making a business better. These tasks can include everything from sales, business expansion and increasing revenue and profitability, through to strategic decision making, building partnerships and general growth activities.     

Employment Outlook and Salary

According to the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment within the financial and business operations sectors are set to increase by 8% between 2014 and 2024.

In an increasingly sophisticated market, candidates holding advanced degrees and relevant experience will have a distinct advantage over those who don’t.   

While figures vary based upon skills, expertise and experience, a business development manager in the US can expect to earn on average, around $70,000 per annum. In the UK, business development managers can expect to earn an average of £34,130 per year. While this salary is considerably lower than that received by their US counterparts, the earning potential of those in the UK also depends largely on the knowledge of related subjects as well as relevant experience gained within the industry. Senior positions such as Business Development VPs and Associate Directors of Business Development can earn from $150,000 to $200,000

Job Description

A business development professional is primarily responsible for sourcing new leads by networking, advertising or cold calling in order to gain interest from potential clients. Additionally, the role involves planning pitches and adopting a persuasive approach to convert potential leads into clients. Some business development roles are focused purely on existing clients, looking for growth opportunities or up-sells/cross-sells, developing and improving relationships. Retaining existing accounts and ensuring continued growth is essential to the role, as is the ability to work with all members of staff, from technical and marketing, through to mid and senior level management.

Responsible for developing and maintaining a continuous flow of new business leads within the pipeline, the role of business development professional requires strong strategic planning skills. Thorough knowledge of the market, potential services and additional solutions that could be offered, as well as an understanding of the company’s competitors are essential.

While each role is unique, the main responsibilities of a business development professional can be summarized as follows:

  • Develop a business with prospect for potential new clients.
  • Meeting potential clients through a well-maintained network.
  • Cold calling for potential opportunities within the geographic or market area.
  • Identifying the decision makers of the potential client’s organisation.
  • Build relationships with new clients through research.
  • Set up and arrange meetings between decision makers on the client and company side.   
  • Plan pitches and approaches. Develop proposals with the team and speak to the concerns, needs and objectives of the clients. 
  • Participate regularly in pricing the service/solution.
  • Working through differences to reach a positive solution, using different styles to negotiate or persuade appropriately.

 

Client Retention

  • Present special services and new products to enhance existing relationships.
  • Work with internal colleagues and technical staff to meet customer needs.
  • Participate and arrange external and internal client debriefs.

 

Planning & Strategy

  • Attend various industry functions, such as conferences and association events.
  • Provide information and feedback on current market trends.
  • Consult with senior and mid level management with a view towards developing new products, services and distribution channels.
  • Identify new opportunities for services, campaigns, products and distribution channels that will create leads and increase sales.
  • Using knowledge of competitors and the market, identify and develop the unique selling differentiators and propositions of the company.
