Professionals usually do not have more than 10 to 12 years of experience in this job. Factors that affect the level of salary include job location, technical skills, on-the-job experience, and academic background. In the UK, an average salary of £55,955 per year can be expected, with a range of £34,004 - £101,806.

Job Description
A machine learning engineer is responsible for designing, researching, and building various systems by implementing machine-learning techniques using both supervised and unsupervised methods. They also apply methodologies and technologies associated with artificial intelligence, information retrieval, machine learning, ontology engineering and/or natural language processing technologies. They may work in a team or individually to realize and envision cutting-edge ideas through development, prototyping and deployment. 

Typical Responsibilities 

  • Applying data mining and machine learning technologies to develop innovative solutions
  • Supporting various customized projects by planning, designing as well as implementing statistical models of relevant data sets
  • Working with technology teams in big data platforms to support machine-learning algorithms 
  • Deploying statistical algorithms and machine learning algorithms within the Apache Spark environment
  • Collaborating with subject matter experts and business owners
  • Working with engineering domain experts, using data sets to solve real life problems
  • Applying machine learning tools and techniques to provide insight into utility process trends 
  • Conducting required design and complete code reviews
  • Selecting and implementing state of the art algorithms and technologies 
  • Analyzing and improving scalability, efficiency and stability of various components
  • Optimizing code and programs to run in a distributed environment

Key Skills & Qualifications      
Machine learning engineers work with complex and sophisticated data and techniques, so professionals should possess excellent mathematical and programming skills in order to execute work related to algorithms and computations. Communication skills - both verbal and written - are also important as you will be required to explain processes to non-technical users. Excellent analytical skills are required, as the work involves isolating issues and projecting outcomes that must be resolved to make the programs efficient and effective.  
A Bachelor’s degree, Masters or Ph.D. degree in computer engineering/science, operations research, statistics, industrial engineering, mathematics and other related technical fields, is recommended.   

Required job skills:

  • Solid programming skills, including programming languages C/C++, Scala, Java and knowledge of scripting languages such as Python, R, Bash and programming paradigms such as functional and object-oriented 
  • Experience in Data Analytics, Data Mining, and Big Data projects using techniques and tools such as Kafka, Hadoop, HBase, Spark and Presto 
  • Solid skills and knowledge in deep learning/machine learning frameworks & libraries (Apache Spark MLlib, auto-sklearn, scikit-learn, Caffe2, Tensorflow, etc.) 
  • Thorough software programming and engineering skills, including best practices, methodologies and related tools
  • Significant experience in applying advanced analytics solutions and developing machine learning models to solve complex business problems 
  • Experience with unsupervised and supervised machine learning methods
  • Experience in processing large-scale data sets (using HBase, Hadoop, Pig, etc.)
  • Experience in deploying solutions and working in a team in an agile or iterative software development environment 
  • Object-oriented programming (OOP) languages: Scala, Java 
  • Quantitative background in computer science, Statistics, data science, informatics, or related field  
  • In-depth knowledge of machine learning statistical models and algorithms 
  • Experience with Python 
  • Experience in using Big Data technology
