Position: Senior Underground Estimator

Report To: Chief Estimator

Responsible For: Taking charge of the estimate as a whole.

Interacts With: Agency, Subcontractors, Suppliers

Geographical Area: Southern California

Areas of Estimating Expertise:

  • Large Diameter Pipelines: Water, Sewer, Storm Drain

  • Flood Control: Concrete channels, Reinforced Concrete Boxes

  • Incidental Work: Shoring, Traffic Control, Control of Water, Dewatering, Paving and Street Restoration, Protection and Support of Existing Utilities, Concrete Structures, Mechanical Equipment such as Valves, Blow Offs, Pumps, Cathodic Protection

Overview:

  • Read thoroughly the bid's plans and specifications.

  • Analyze the geotechnical information.

  • Analyze permits, the impact on the project and the cost of the fees.

  • Attend the pre bid conference, job walks, sign the attendance sheet and get a copy.

  • Visit the jobsite; look for conflict with existing utilities, traffic, access, shoring existing facilities, take pictures.

  • Organize any prebid site investigation

  • Attend the engineering weekly meetings, ask for help and input from the team, discuss the job challenges and how to approach the job.

  • In coordination with management, assign the items to be taken off and / or estimated by other members of the team.

  • Assess the risks associated with the general and special conditions, environmental constraints, access, damages to existing facilities.

  • Estimate in detail all the portions of the work that will or may be self-performed.

  • Check the estimate against actual Job cost reports for similar work.

  • Establish a pre bid schedule to determine job duration or ask for help.

  • Solicit subcontractors and suppliers. Request their scope, as early as possible, discuss quantities, exclusions, scope and any schedule impact.

Qualifications:

  • 10+ years in underground construction.

  • At least 5 years in public works estimating.

  • Work experience in the Southern and/or Northern California public works market area.

  • Must be willing to grow with the company and commit to a long-term relationship.

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management or applicable field experience.
