There is a wide variety of roles within the renewable energy sector, including renewable energy manager, energy efficiency engineer, energy manager, project energy engineer, renewable energy associate engineer and technician. Renewable energy professionals are part of the growing sectors of green jobs that involve environmentally friendly production. Renewable energy roles focus on the effective and efficient functioning of equipment that generates, collects, or distributes power through various alternative means.

Renewable energy managers typically oversee activities within plants to ensure trouble-free operation, checking the required qualities of generated energy, coordinating with plant workers, operators, engineers and supervisors. They assist in preparation of training documents and safety regulations. They should be able to set up mechanical equipment and work with direct and alternating current as well as other modes of power.

Typical employers include:

  • Energy agencies and partnerships
  • Higher education institutions
  • Health trusts
  • Large charities
  • Voluntary/community organisations
  • Local government

Renewable energy roles within the commercial sector can be found with:

  • Construction companies
  • Manufacturers
  • Environmental consultancies
  • Nuclear energy companies
  • Utilities companies
  • Retail chains and supermarkets

Job Specification, Salary, Outlook
Renewable energy professionals work to increase the energy production of clean energy sources like solar and wind power. While coal, oil and natural gas remain the main sources of power all over the world, concerns about their effect on the environment and the depletion have lead to increasing use of renewable energy sources such as solar, hydro and wind. Renewable energy professionals install, maintain and repair equipment that provides utilities and power through these new sources.

So how much do renewable energy professionals earn? It depends on a number of factors, but an average salary for energy engineers, and energy analysts in the United States are $67,748 and $59,578 per year respectively, with a range of $51,070 - $91,338, and $40,919 - $81,643 respectively. Factors that affect the level of salary include job location, technical skills, subject knowledge and academic background. In the UK, an average salary of £28,926 per year for energy engineers, and £27,812 for energy analysts can be expected, with a range of £22,560 - £46,711, and £21,349 - £38,504 respectively.
