Fixed income traders are investment and finance professionals who are generally involved in the trading of various fixed income securities. These traders analyze current market conditions, study varying market trends, and make decisions aimed to maximize profits for their investors. Typical responsibilities of a fixed income sales and trading professional include buying and selling securities for different types of institutions or clients.  
Fixed income sales traders need to stay in constant contact with their investors and clients. They provide clients with guidance on the risks they are taking and on their transactions. They’re also responsible for updating inventory records and the maintenance of fixed-income securities. Traders identify and leverage opportunities, and develop creative and innovative trading ideas.   

Job Specification, Salary, Outlook
A fixed income trader performs back-end office work, confirms that the trades are accurately performed, and submits them for final processing. They document information on each trade and ensure that all records and documents are up to date. Fixed income securities include derivatives, loans, and bonds, which include credit and corporate products as well as interest rate products. Trading in different fixed income investments generally provides a fixed rate of ROI. 
So how much do fixed income traders earn? It depends on a number of factors, but the average salary for fixed income traders in the United States is $82,752 per annum, with a range of $49,816 - $228,615. Factors that affect the level of salary include job location, experience, and academic background. In the UK, an average salary of £68,314 per year can be expected, with a range of £31,595 - £220,000.

Job Description
Fixed income traders perform analysis of market conditions, and work with their clients to understand their financial objectives or goals. Traders are responsible for managing daily trading, ensuring it is done in a timely manner and that they comply with the existing regulatory policies. They help clients to meet their targets by accurately identifying and purchasing the optimum products for them.  

Typical Responsibilities 

  • Assisting the sales team in managing institutional relationships, including insurance companies, banks and asset management firms
  • Executing client transactions 
  • Providing support for salespeople when attending prospect and client visits  
  • Collection, gathering, organization and analysis of transaction and bond data for preparation of reports and client presentations
  • Fulfilling customer orders and constructing sales messages 
  • Facilitating information sharing between senior salespeople 

Key Skills & Qualifications      
Fixed income sales and trading professionals should have a degree in business, finance, mathematics or accounting; an MBA degree gives an added advantage. In addition, solid analytical and quantitative aptitude, decision-making skills in high pressure situations, outstanding interpersonal skills and a passion for financial markets are essential.
